We're here to help you do things with computers in your home. Digital entertainment, security, surveillance, connectivity, automation - we'll cover them all. Here are links to some of our most popular sources of information.
|
We show you how to build real systems with readily available components. For your convenience we provide components and complete kits for our projects. This way you can be sure the components you get will work together.
|
Maybe you want to use the systems we talk about but don't have the time to build one from scratch. No problem. We also offer complete systems to get you going right away.

 | Get Ready for Daylight Savings Time
|
Beginning this year the US is extending Daylight Savings Time (DST) by starting two weeks early and ending two weeks later than usual. Computers that automatically adjust their clock for DST will need some updating to account for the change.

 | Using Logical Volume Management with MythTV
|
Logical Volume Management adds a layer of abstraction over physical storage devices (hard drives) and partitions. From the HOW-TO we read...
Logical volume management provides a higher-level view of the disk storage on a computer system than the traditional view of disks and partitions. This gives the system administrator much more flexibility in allocating storage to applications and users.
Storage volumes created under the control of the logical volume manager can be resized and moved around almost at will, although this may need some upgrading of file system tools.
The logical volume manager also allows management of storage volumes in user-defined groups, allowing the system administrator to deal with sensibly named volume groups such as "development" and "sales" rather than physical disk names such as "sda" and "sdb".
LVM2 is the latest Logical Volume Management system for Linux. You can view the LVM HOW-TO for more information.
We're exploring the use of LVM2 on our MythTV systems. Basically we want an easy way to increase storage space as we inevitably run out storing our music, videos and recordings. LVM2 will give us that capability. Using it has prove surprisingly simple. Here's how....

 | Installing Modular X
|
In the course of upgrading our MythTV tutorial and system for 0.19, we decided to try the new modular X Window system. Modular X breaks the X Window system down into individual modules that can be installed separately. This should have some space savings which we will need for our small-footprint MythTV frontend only system. You can find out more about modular X at their website.
There are several sites that offer help for installing modular X. One of note is a HOW-TO that can be found on the Gentoo website. It is a bit out dated as modular X is no longer masked. Otherwise the information is relevant.
We started out following the Gentoo HOW-TO skipping the part about backing up the old xorg-x11. Once we started down this road we weren't going back! So here's the steps we followed...
